SUMMARY:Radley Horton\, Ph.D. “The Heat is on: The Climate Imperative”
DESCRIPTION:In 2007 Arctic sea ice crashed to levels far below anything that had been seen in the last 50 years. Climate models predicted this wouldn’t happen before the year 2100 or 2050 at the earliest. If the climate models missed the timing so badly what other climate behavior could they be missing? The earth may be far more sensitive to greenhouse gases than climate scientists have thought. And what happens to the systems that respond to climate change whether it is crops or the economy? Those systems too could be more sensitive in a nonlinear way to a given amount of warming than we thought they were. Small changes in temperature might be a climate tipping point leading to catastrophic consequences. Our speaker will expand on these issues and answer questions related to them. To see a preview of his talk view this seven minute video\, “The Most Important Climate\nTipping Point is Us” at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHokNRalOy0&feature=emb_logo \nTo view the Webinar\, log on to: https://bit.ly/30IBj21

SUMMARY:Josh Geballe “Governor Lamont’s State Modernization and “Streamlining Agenda”
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever stopped to think about the complexities of running a State government like Connecticut’s? Our speaker this week is Josh Geballe\, Chief Operating Officer and Commissioner of Administrative Services for the State of Connecticut. His job includes being responsible for the operation of 25 State agencies and 30\,000 employees who provide critical services that support the health\, safety\, economic development\, environmental protection\, social safety net\, and quality of life for the State of Connecticut. Beyond day- to- day operations\, Mr. Geballe is in charge of envisioning ways of shaking up how Connecticut government does business. His job is to deal with efforts to modernize and streamline administration of the State’s operations. This includes thinking about public/private partnerships; how best to deliver services; how to maintain and upgrade personnel talent; and how to ensure the effective use of technology by maximizing digitization in State government so State employees can work more efficiently. With approximately 25% of the State’s workforce eligible to retire on July 1\, 2022\, he will discuss a blueprint of what State government will look like going forward from that date.

SUMMARY:Hawk Watch 2020 Season Report
DESCRIPTION:Join Quaker Ridge Hawk Watch Counter Christina Baal and Bird Education Specialist Ryan MacLean for a virtual presentation on the results of this year’s hawk watch season! \nAn average of 10 – 20\,000 migrating hawks\, eagles\, and falcons are seen over the Greenwich Audubon Center each fall. Hawk watchers submit daily totals of hawks to ornithologists\, who are then able to interpret this data and find trends in raptor populations. Hawk watching is a form of community science that is invaluable to our understanding of raptors’ migration patterns. There are many dedicated volunteers who help support the collection and reporting of this critical data. \nWe hope you join us to learn about how many of each raptor species we saw this season\, and how their numbers compare to past years. We will also share information about what birds to look for in the coming months and ways to get involved with our Hawk Watch next year! \nProgram Fee: FREE\nNo pre-registration is required\nNature enthusiasts of all ages and experience levels are welcome\nTo view this livestream program\, go to the Greenwich Audubon Center Facebook homepage or our Facebook videos page when the livestream is scheduled to begin. You do not have to have a Facebook account to view and enjoy this online experience.\nDonations Appreciated: If you wish to make a donation to support the birds and wildlife that Audubon protects\, please go to greenwich.audubon.org/support-our-work.

SUMMARY:The Spirit of Christmas Past: Four Centuries of Christmas in New England. Mr. Turino
DESCRIPTION:On Sun.\, Dec. 6\, 2020\, at 5:30 p.m.\, the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum will present Ken Turino\, Manager of Community Partnerships and Resource Development at Historic New England\, for an illustrated\, virtual talk titled\, The Spirit of Christmas Past: Four Centuries of Christmas in New England. Mr. Turino will take questions from viewers after his presentation. \nThis well-illustrated lecture traces the development of the celebration of Christmas\, from the time it was outlawed in 17th century New England through the beginning of the 21st century\, when all the trappings of a traditional Christmas were in place. For many\, the celebration of Christmas today is the most important holiday of the year. However\, many of the customs which we take for granted as part of the current holiday festivities and religious celebrations are actually a product of more recent history. The presentation will look at how Christmas was transformed from a rowdy celebration to a family-centered event. Among the topics discussed are how the Christmas tree became popular\, halls were decked\, and Santa Claus came to town.

SUMMARY:Date with an Author: "Deepfake" by Sarah Darer Littman
DESCRIPTION:Greenwich Library presents Date with an Author\, featuring local Greenwich young adult author Sarah Darer Littman\, who will talk about her new novel\, Deepfake …what happens when anyone can make a video of you saying anything? \nIn Deepfake\, Dara Simons and Will Halpern have everything they’ve ever wanted. They are the rulers of Greenpoint High’s geekdom\, overachieving in every way\, and it’s an intense competition to see who will be valedictorian. One the entire school is invested in. That is\, until Rumor Has It\, the anonymous gossip site\, posts a video of Dara accusing Will of paying someone to take the SAT for him. When the video goes viral\, suddenly Will’s being investigated\, and everyone’s wondering how he pulled off cheating on the SAT. But Dara swears that she didn’t say any of those things\, which seems a little hard to believe since it’s her in the video. Did Will cheat? Is it Dara saying he did? Who’s lying\, and who’s telling the truth? The answer is more shocking than anyone realizes…
