SUMMARY:Deacon Robert Henrey: How the West came to Encounter the East
DESCRIPTION:Deacon Robert Henrey presents a new 4-part Spring series via Zoom: How the West came to Encounter the East \nIn his latest series of illustrated presentations\, Robert’s goal is to share his interest in Asian cultures\, their histories\, religious traditions and languages – an interest stimulated thanks to several years living and working in South East Asia and to ongoing opportunities for professional contacts\, travel and study. He describes the process whereby adventurers\, traders and scholarly missionaries brought back home a growing awareness of the richness they had encountered.\nEach session is designed to stimulate discussion. \nMay 26 – Part Three: The Portuguese Century of Discovery \nJune 2 – Part Four: The Rise and Fall of the Mughals and how rival Europeans stepped into the void \nJoin us at 5:00 PM for these engaging events on this Zoom link: https://zoom.us/j/91648902276

SUMMARY:Date with an Author: Deborah Goodrich Royce\, Author of "Ruby Falls"
DESCRIPTION:AuthorsLive is excited to welcome former actress\, story editor\, and veteran author of Finding Mrs. Ford\, Deborah Goodrich Royce\, to discuss her new chilling psychological thriller Ruby Falls\, a nail-biting tale of a fragile young actress\, the new husband she barely knows\, and her growing suspicion that the secrets he harbors may eclipse her own. Ms. Royce will be in conversation with Cos Cob Library branch manager Laura Matthews. \nOn a brilliantly sunny July day\, six-year-old Ruby is abandoned by her father in the suffocating dark of a Tennessee cave. Twenty years later\, transformed into soap opera star Eleanor Russell\, she is fired under dubious circumstances. Fleeing to Europe\, she marries a glamorous stranger named Orlando Montague and keeps her past closely hidden. \nTogether\, Eleanor and Orlando start afresh in LA. Setting up house in a storybook cottage in the Hollywood Hills\, Eleanor is cast in a dream role—the lead in a remake of Rebecca. As she immerses herself in that eerie gothic tale\, Orlando’s personality changes\, ghosts of her past reemerge\, and Eleanor fears she is not the only person in her marriage with a secret. \nIn this thrilling and twisty homage to Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca\, the story ricochets through the streets of Los Angeles\, a dangerous marriage to an exotic stranger\, and the mind of a young woman whose past may not release her.

SUMMARY:Center for HOPE Luncheon with Suleika Jaouad
DESCRIPTION:The Center for HOPE is pleased to welcome best-selling author and Emmy Award-winning journalist Suleika Jaouad as the speaker for its 2021 Annual Luncheon. This event will be held virtually via Zoom on Tuesday\, June 1 at noon. \nSuleika’s career aspirations as a war correspondent were cut short when\, after her graduation from Princeton University\, she was diagnosed with leukemia. It is a profound and uplifting saga of survival\, and an inspiring exploration of what it means to begin again. \nSuleika has served on Barack Obama’s Presidential Cancer Panel\, the national advisory board of the Bone Marrow and Cancer Foundation\, and the Brooklyn Public Library’s Arts & Letters Committee. She was awarded the Red Door Advocacy & Community Service Award\, and has been an artist in residence at Ucross\, ArtYard\, and the Kerouac Project. \nTickets can be purchased now. SUMMARY:High Life in the Low Country: Fine and Decorative Arts of Charleston
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, June 7\, 2021\, 1:00 pm-3:00 pm\, The Greenwich Decorative Arts Society presents a lecture High Life in the Low Country: Fine and Decorative Arts of Charleston by Thomas Savage\, Director of Museum Affairs\, Winterthur Museum\, Garden and Library. \nIn 1773 visiting Bostonian Josiah Quincy wrote of Charleston\, “In grandeur\, splendor of buildings\, decorations\, equipages\, numbers\, commerce\, shipping\, and indeed in almost everything it far surpasses all I ever saw or ever expected to see in America.” Quincy was witness to Charleston’s “Golden Age”\, the eve of revolution when the constant arrival of foreign artisans and imported consumer goods made the South Carolina low country the most fashion conscious society in colonial America. This lecture will examine the fine and decorative arts produced at home and abroad that contributed to Charleston’s unique character. \n  \n

SUMMARY:In Plain Sight: The Greenwich Library Print Collection at the Flinn Gallery
DESCRIPTION:The Flinn Gallery is pleased to present the second part of our In Plain Sight exhibition\, The Greenwich Library Print Collection\, opening on Thursday\, February 6\, 2020. \n  \nAcquired through gifts and purchase\, these 35 works on paper have all previously been seen on the walls of the library.
Not merely placed there for decoration\, the works enhance the library’s learning spaces and encourage creative thinking. In this exhibition\, we celebrate the combined commitment both the Greenwich Library and the Flinn Gallery have made to lifelong learning that goes beyond books and includes visual arts. \nThe Library’s Print Collection originated at mid-century\, through the efforts of the “Print Committee of the Friends\,” subcommittee of the Friends of the Greenwich Library.
The committee acquired prints\, intended for the Lending Art Program\, from galleries including Associated American Artists which introduced fine art\, in the form of prints\, to a middle-class audience.\nCoinciding with post-war suburban growth\, and new developments in print technology and experimentation\, the committee was able to build a significant collection for the Greenwich community to enjoy.

Ranging in date from 1950-1980\, and including a variety of print methods\, these artworks were borrowed for local offices and homes for many years. Over time\, as individual prints were deemed too valuable or fragile to circulate\, they were hung on the library’s walls instead. \nThe show’s opening reception will be held Thursday\, February 6\, from 6-8pm. The Flinn Gallery\, sponsored by the Friends of the Greenwich Library\, is located on the second floor of the library’s main branch at 101 West Putnam Avenue\, Greenwich CT. The gallery is open daily Tuesday to Saturday 10-5\, Thursday until 8\, and Sunday 1-5. For more information\, please call the gallery: 203.622.7947

SUMMARY:Neighbor-to-Neighbor Food and Essentials Drive
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to all who continue to contribute faithfully to our weekly collections. It was a bit “lean” on the 8th in spite of the continuing need. This may be a good time to plan to add a few extra items to our shopping baskets on a regular basis so that each week or every few weeks we can make a donation to Neighbor-to-Neighbor. Now that we are coming out of our COVID hibernation it’s easy to overlook the needy in our community. So bring us your donations every Tuesday from 9-11 to the parking area across Riverside Ave from St Catherine’s Rectory. And bring us your wonderful smiles\, too!
