SUMMARY:Self\, assembled
DESCRIPTION:The Flinn Gallery is pleased to present Self\, assembled\, an exploration of identity through the medium of collage\, featuring the work of artists Rodriguez Calero\, Kevin Hetzel and Jason Noushin. The exhibit opens with a reception on Thursday\, December 15th from 6-8 pm. \n In the hands of these artists\, the technique of collage provides a complex visual metaphor for the hybrid and fluid nature of identity itself. Using different approaches\, each artist delves into their own background\, drawing imagery from personal and collective spheres\, from history\, culture\, religion\, race\, gender or family. This source material is then fragmented\, layered\, concealed or revealed\, decontextualized and juxtaposed. Messy underlayers are revealed\, meanings shift and become unstable. By distorting our familiar perspective\, Calero\, Hetzel and Noushin compel us to look anew at the fixed narratives that define and pin us down\, opening up fresh possibilities for re-imagining the concept of identity and of the self. \nKevin Hetzel investigates identity through the lens of socio-economic class\, focusing specifically on his family’s genealogy and working-class roots. For Hetzel\, the physical\, labor intensive technique of making art connects him to his ancestors’ manual traditions of production. Hetzel carefully cuts out vintage family photographs and combines them with leftover financial documents mapping the economic realities of his subjects’ lives. Going a step further\, Hetzel composes hybrid\, collage-like ensembles\, hanging groupings of works together to create one individual portrait. He says\, “My work seeks to challenge\, restructure and expand upon [Eurocentric] traditions of portraiture to depict those who would be otherwise unknown… My hope is to attain a broader perspective of culture\, society and life by challenging the boundaries of identity.” Kevin Hetzel was born and raised in Bucks County\, Pennsylvania and is currently based in Bethesda\, Maryland. \nJason Noushin was born in England but raised in Iran where he experienced that country’s brutal Islamic Revolution and subsequent violent repression. That repression\, especially of women\, continues to this day and informs his newest work\, which is being shown for the first time as part of this exhibition. Noushin left Iran soon after the beginning of the Iran-Iraq war in 1980. He has lived in France\, the UK and for the last two decades in New Haven\, CT. A self-taught artist and collector of antiquated books\, he uses their pages and bindings to create impromptu canvases upon which he draws and paints his subjects. “I enjoy the past. I love history. I find an inspiration in the paper and in the typeface and in the material that went into making the binding. All of that is inspiration…for the greater project [which is] about documenting human history. It’s about reminding viewers of stories\, or of conflicts\, or of our human deeds. I don’t necessarily do the work to make statements but to generate interest in having dialogue.” \nArtist Rodriguez Calero was born in Puerto Rico\, grew up in New York\, and has studied and worked in both countries over the years. She says\, “I am defined but not limited to being a Nuyorican\, and embrace all that is an extension of my heritage and beliefs…I gather inner strengths from our never-ending struggles that we deal with as a people and as an individual.” Her artwork mixes a very modern sensibility with references to traditional culture and beliefs\, juxtaposing imagery drawn from classical art\, religion\, contemporary urban culture and her own Puerto Rican heritage\, blurring lines of gender\, ethnicity\, race\, sexuality\, even of species. She appropriates her imagery from found printed materials such as glossy magazines\, pamphlets\, packaging\, as well as her own photographs. Her vibrant and strangely captivating compositions attract and repel\, featuring jaunty beings who revel in their unique ambiguity\, caring not one iota for what we think of them. \nKirsten Pitts and Isabelle Schiavi are the curators of Self\, assembled which opens with a reception on Thursday\, December 15th from 6-8pm. The show runs through February 1\, 2023. \nSpecial Events: \nArtist Talk: Saturday\, January 14th at 2 pm in the gallery. \nGreenwich Library’s Friday Film Series: December 20th from 5 – 6.45 pm – Art Lounge in the gallery\nfollowed at 7 pm by a Screening of Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis in the Berkley Theater. \nThe Flinn Gallery\, sponsored by the Friends of Greenwich Library is located on the second floor of the library at 101 West Putnam Avenue\, Greenwich\, CT. The gallery is opened daily Monday to Saturday\, 10-5\, Thursday til 8\, and Sunday 1-5. \nFor more information\, please call the gallery: 203.622.7947\nwww.flinngallery.com

SUMMARY:GLOW
DESCRIPTION:The Flinn Gallery is pleased to present GLOW\, featuring four abstract artists: Ryan Crotty\, Susan Meyer\, Linda Kamille Schmidt\, and Audrey Stone. These two- and three-dimensional artworks intersect with themes of color\, transparency\, process\, and materiality. Opening Reception\, Thursday\, February 9\, 6 – 8 pm\, Flinn Gallery. Curated by Ellen Hawley\, “GLOW invites visitors to lean in and examine the close relationship between colors and discover the way ambient light plays upon color illuminating artworks that appear to glow\, pulsate\, and float in space.” \nLinda Kamille Schmidt flexes her visual-spatial intelligence as she masterfully composes colorful textiles in single\, double\, and triple layers of opaque and translucent panes. Created for GLOW\, these approximately 8’ hanging works are shown alongside framed pieces. \nThe geometric sculptures by Susan Meyer are constructed of wood\, acrylic\, paint\, and mixed media. Ambient light catches the colorful panes of acrylic in “Plinth\,” an impressive 5’ 5″h x 9’ 5″w sculpture that includes smaller pieces reminiscent of scholars’ rocks. Also on view are geodesic orbs composed of acrylic and wood polygons. \nAudrey Stone’s acrylic paintings defy their two-dimensions when viewers gaze upon them closely. Her paintings are smart and meticulous with lines of subtle color gradients that seem to pulse. She is intrigued by “the way the eye and brain process these adjacent hues\, generating visual vibrations that are simultaneously exciting and calming.” \nRyan Crotty’s color field paintings glow and inspire. The viewer experiences “material deception” as if neon tubes are illuminated through the high gloss frames. Crotty achieves this magic by adding\, removing\, and mixing layers of translucent gel paint with a squeegee\, highlighting visual evidence of the canvas support structure\, surface imperfections and material composition. Crotty notes\, “The canvas acts as a support for pigment and binding medium that allows color and light to coalesce. Primary colors blend to create secondary and tertiary minimalist color field paintings.” \nAccording to curator Ellen Hawley\, “the Flinn Gallery is in its 94-year and has exhibited the greats from Picasso to Pollack\, Matisse to Motherwell\, yet through the decades\, has maintained a focus on showing affordable art. In the 1960’s and 70’s\, the Gallery (then known as the Hurlbutt Gallery) curated a series called Mr. & Mrs. Hirshhorn Select: Art for the Young Collector where renowned artists priced their works from $25-$500. The artist list is over 100 names long and includes: Josef & Anni Albers\, Jean Dubuffet\, Al Held\, David Hockney\, Alex Katz\, Louise Nevelson\, Ad Reinhardt\, Edward Ruscha\, George Segal\, Frank Stella\, to name several. The Gallery is fortunate to occupy a stunning space designed by Cesar Pelli in a state-of-the-art library where we host related programming.” \nEvents: \nThursday\, February 9\, 6 – 8 pm\, Opening Reception\, Flinn Gallery \nPosting Thursday February 16\, online\nArtist Talk: Rita A. Fucillo\, Publisher of Art New England\, met with GLOW artists online. Watch the pre-recorded Zoom interview on our website\, link to come. \nThursday\, February 23\, 7 pm\nLecture by Fritz Horstman of the Josef & Anni Albers Foundation\, Marx Family Black Box Theater\, Greenwich Library \nFriday\, March 3: 5:00 – 6:45 pm\, Art Lounge\,\, Flinn Gallery\nTo be followed at 7:00 pm by a screening of documentary film Beyond Visible: Hilma af Klint in the Berkley Theater\, part of the Library’s Friday Film Series. \nThe Flinn Gallery is funded and sponsored by the Friends of Greenwich Library. SUMMARY:Pushing Boundaries: Documentary of Greenwich Basketball Great Worthy Patterson
DESCRIPTION:To kick off Black History month\, Greenwich Historical Society will host the public premiere of ‘Pushing Boundaries: UConn’s First NBA Player’\, an account of the life and career of accomplished athlete and music executive Worthy Patterson\, who died in 2022 at 91. \nRaised in Greenwich and a student at Greenwich High School\, Patterson was the first black player to captain a sport at UConn. He became the first UConn alumnus\, as well as one of the first generation of black basketball players\, to play in an NBA game as a member of the St. Louis Hawks. \nDocumentary producer and multiple Emmy Award-winning journalist Ronnie Forchheimer tells the remarkable story of Patterson excelling in predominately white Greenwich\, becoming the first black captain of any sport at UConn\, and the first of UConn’s 38 players in the NBA\, as well as his post NBA career as a successful executive at RCA and Warner Brothers. Patterson notably attained these career heights as a Black person navigating the discrimination and racism before\, during and after the civil rights movement. \nA Q & A with Forchheimer will follow the screening. Members of Patterson’s family\, including his wife Queen and son Worthy Patterson III\, will join from California via Zoom.

SUMMARY:Play With Your Food Lunchtime Playreadings
DESCRIPTION:After a sold-out series of performances in January\, Play With Your Food is back and ready to “play” again February 14 – 16 in Westport\, Southport and Greenwich. And in an exciting twist\, audiences will be treated to some major star power this month: Connecticut-based theater\, film and TV actors Patricia Kalember and Daniel Gerroll will take on Tom Stoppard (whose play Leopoldstat is currently on Broadway) when they perform a scene from his Tony Award-winning masterpiece\, The Real Thing. Still beloved from her years on TV’s Thirtysomething and Sisters\, Kalember’s most recent venture was taking on Gloria Steinem in Broadway’s Gloria: A Life. Prior to that\, she starred in Don’t Dress for Dinner and has been featured on numerous television shows such as Madam Secretary and Orange is the New Black. Daniel Gerroll’s breakout role was in Chariots of Fire and has long performed on stages and screens (large and small) across the UK and New York City. Broadway plays include Plenty\, The Homecoming\, Enchanted April and Misery while his most recent films include Still Alice and Those People. Artistic Director Carole Schweid couldn’t be more delighted that Kalember and Gerroll are returning to PWYF stages! \nAlso on the February menu are two additional one-act winners: Tony Award winner John Patrick Shanley’s The Red Coat and Craig Pospisil’s Dissonance. In honor of Valentine’s Week\, all three plays tackle the complexities of love\, new\, old and somewhere in the middle. Casting is in development. \nTickets are nearly sold out for the February 14 performance at MoCA Westport but tickets are available for February 15 at Pequot Library in Southport and February 16 at Greenwich Art Council. All performances begin at 12 noon and are followed by a talkback with the cast and director. Rounding out the day is a delicious fresh boxed lunch that audiences can stay and enjoy in the beautiful art-filled galleries at each of their carefully chosen venues or take\n“to go.” February caterers are Marcia Selden Catering (Westport)\, The Porch at Christie’s (Southport) and Aux Delices (Greenwich.) Tickets are $60 each. For more information on the February performances\, remaining 2023 Play With Your Food schedule or to purchase tickets visit the website at JIBProductions.org or call the Box Office at (203) 293-8729.
