SUMMARY:Blackberry Smoke Summer '22 Tour: Rasslin' Is Real
DESCRIPTION:Throughout their career\, Blackberry Smoke— vocalist/lead guitarist Charlie Starr\, guitarist/vocalist Paul Jackson\, bassist/vocalist Richard Turner\, drummer Brit Turner\, and keyboardist Brandon Still—has embodied Georgia’s rich musical legacy\, honoring the people\, places and sounds of their home state. As the band celebrates their 20th anniversary this year\, their reverence for Georgia has only deepened. \nOn their latest album\, You Hear Georgia\, the follow-up to 2018’s critically acclaimed Find a Light\, Blackberry Smoke is further celebrating these roots with 10 new songs that feel like Georgia\, accented by the addition of Grammy-winning producer and fellow Georgia-native\, Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell\, Brandi Carlile). “Dave and I had spoken for the last few years about making a record\,” Starr says. “Finally\, it worked out\, our schedule and his schedule\, and we said\, yes—let’s make a record.” \nBlackberry Smoke worked quickly\, spending just 10 days at Nashville’s famed RCA Studio A\, Cobb’s home base since 2016. The band recorded live on the floor\, giving You Hear Georgia a crisp\, outgoing feel. Like other Blackberry Smoke efforts\, this album leans into well-crafted Southern rock driven by jagged guitar riffs and rich instrumentation\, as the band layers on rollicking piano (“Live It Down”)\, funky grooves (“Hey Delilah”)\, and introspective acoustic sounds (the stripped-down\, folk-leaning “Old Enough to Know”).\n“He’s a very laid-back guy with excellent ideas\, but he’s very enthusiastic about making music\, and he’s right in there with you having a ball\,” Starr says. “He’s a calming presence and so knowledgeable musically\, and he knows how to get what he wants in the studio. I don’t know if we could have made a record in 10 days with everyone\, and that definitely speaks to Dave’s ability.” \nWorking with Cobb was the right move\, as his approach brought warmth and looseness to the proceedings\, while his easygoing demeanor and songwriting background allowed him to provide perceptive insights into this particular batch of Blackberry Smoke songs. In fact\, the producer encouraged Blackberry Smoke to pursue the title track after hearing Starr noodling on the idea in the studio. \n“He heard me play it\, just the riff\, and I sang a little bit of a verse and he said\, ‘What’s that? What’s that?’” Starr says. “I said\, ‘It’s just something that’s not finished yet.’ And he said\, ‘Well\, finish it\, because we want to record that too.’ So I went back to the hotel room and finished it\, and there we go.” \n“You Hear Georgia” features a narrator who’s underestimated because of outward appearances and misguided stereotypes\, which is a theme of Starr’s lyrics this time around\, particularly as it relates to the band’s Southern roots. “Lyrically\, the song is about the South being misunderstood. It’s obviously a rough and tumble world\, and there’s a lot of bad people. But there’s a lot of good people too. It started with the idea of how people might have a preconceived opinion of you because of a thick Southern accent\, then expanded into the reality of how some people just seem to have such a hard time getting along\, thanks to political or religious views\, or simply what part of the country you come from.” \nIn that spirit\, Starr found collaborating valuable as You Hear Georgia’s songs came together. Jamey Johnson ended up lending gruff and tender vocals to the pedal steel-augmented “Lonesome For a Livin’” after he and Starr started reminiscing about a previous collaboration\, their 2009 cover of the Willie Nelson-penned “Yesterday’s Wine.”

SUMMARY:Ann Wilson Of Heart
DESCRIPTION:There is a calm\, serene spirituality about Ann Wilson in 2022 which instantly draws you to her. She feels like a warm\, wise someone who has seen enough bullshit to know how to avoid it calmly\, and someone who is at peace with whatever she needs to be at peace with. Perhaps that is why the soul (and\, indeed title) of her latest album\, Fierce Bliss\, offers such universally entertaining\, engaging\, honest and safe harbor from these unpredictable times. It is classic rock comfort food of the finest ingredients\, carrying a richness and light that allows you to escape into timeless nostalgia\, 11 perfectly weighted and selected songs ranging from Wilson’s own co-penned originals to breathtaking covers and collaborations. Indeed\, Fierce Bliss is not just an album for fans of Ann Wilson and Heart\, it is an album for everyone seeking a lavish ticket out of the sharp edges of an increasingly fraught society. Fierce Bliss also marks perhaps the first time in her illustrious career that Ann Wilson has truly felt the wind in her wings\, something which might seem a strange statement given her pioneering history. \nOne of the premier hard rock vocalists of all-time\, Wilson smashed boundaries with her band Heart\, the 8-times platinum\, 35 million-plus selling Rock and Roll Hall of Fame trailblazers who formed in 1973. During a decades-long career\, Wilson rode the roller-coaster of fame\, fortune and madness\, learning both joyous and hard\, hard lessons along the way. In recent times\, she’d managed to find a band out on the West Coast that she toured with\, and as the pandemic started in March 2020\, Wilson found herself with time to absorb both her life and her future. \n“When I wanted to get together and write\, I contacted them all\,” Wilson starts. “Because of the pandemic they were sheltering in place\, so we couldn’t get together in the same room which is how I like to do it. I’ve tried that technique of recording and writing where you pass files around via emails\, and it just never seems cohesive to me\, there’s not a vitality to it. So I figured I’d wait a little bit and find people out here on the East Coast.”

SUMMARY:Dazzling Dragonflies
DESCRIPTION:Be a Community Scientist by participating in our yearly Dragonfly Survey!\n\nFrom Dragons to Damsels\, these insects are a welcome sight in our summer landscape. Join Audubon naturalist Ryan MacLean for a special presentation about the lives of both the Dragonflies and Damselflies that inhabit our wetlands. Then we will venture outside to conduct a Dragonfly Survey in the meadows and around Georgie’s Pond at Greenwich Audubon Center. This will be an exciting way to experience nature and also contribute to Community Science data on dragonfly populations. Once we have begun counting you can stay as long as you’d like! \nThis IN-PERSON program has a limited capacity and will start with an indoor slide show. Masks are encouraged to be worn during the indoor portion and are optional outdoors. \nTickets MUST be purchased in advance through this online ticket sales page. There will be no ticket sales at the door the day of the program. \nProgram Fee: $15 per person \nRSVP is required. \nRecommended for ages 5 and up. \nPlease register for the quantity of ALL members in your party. SUMMARY:Mickey Hart\, Zakir Hussain & Planet Drum
DESCRIPTION:Mickey Hart:  Born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island\, Hart was the son of champion marching band drummers; he was born to drum.  After high school\, he played in Air Force marching bands before landing in the San Francisco Bay Area where one day he met Bill Kreuzmann of the Grateful Dead.  Soon the band had two drummers.  He began his life-long study of various world percussion traditions with the legendary Allarakha\, whose work with Ravi Shankar redefined the place of tabla in Indian classical music.  He began a solo recording career\, often in partnership with Allarakha’s son Zakir Hussain\, while simultaneously taking on serious research on the history and anthropology of percussion.  His studies led to a number of books\, including Drumming at the Edge of Magic and Planet Drum\, also the name of a band and hit CD which earned the first World Music Grammy. \n  \nZakir Hussain:  The pre-eminent classical tabla virtuoso of our time\, Zakir Hussain is appreciated both in the field of percussion and in the music world at large as an international phenomenon. A national treasure in his native India\, he is one of the world’s most esteemed and influential musicians\, renowned for his genre-defying collaborations in groups like Shakti\, Masters of Percussion\, the Diga Rhythm Band\, Planet Drum\, Tabla Beat Science\, Sangam with Charles Lloyd and Eric Harland\, in trio with Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer and\, most recently\, with Herbie Hancock.  As a composer\, he has scored music for numerous feature films\, major events and productions and has created three concertos.  He has taught at Stanford\, Princeton\, and U.C. Berkeley.  On January 15\, 2018\, HarperCollins India released Zakir’s long-awaited oral memoir\, (available on Amazon)\, A Life in Music\, by Nasreen Munni Kabir\, the distinguished British television producer\, director\, and author. \n  \nSikiru Adepoju:  Born in Nigeria to a family so firmly ensconced in music that his father’s first name meant “descended from drummers\,” Sikiru was still in his teens when he began touring and recording with the Inter-Reformers Band\, led by one of the true pioneers of Afro-Beat\, Nigerian Juju artist Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey.  He came to the U.S. in 1985 to play with O. J. Ekemode’s Nigerian All-Stars\, and soon after connected with Babatunde Olatunji and became an essential member of the Drums of Passion.  Knowing Olatunji brought him into the musical orbit of Mickey Hart\, where he has contributed to projects from Planet Drum and the Global Drum Project to albums like Mystery Box\, Supralingua\, and At The Edge.  He has also recorded with Carlos Santana\, \n  \nStevie Wonder\, and Zakir Hussain among many others.  He has also lead groups like The Honeymakers\, Afrika Heartbeat\, and the Riddim Doctors. \n  \nGiovanni Hidalgo:  As with his brothers in Planet Drum\, Giovanni is the son of a renowned drummer\, the conguero “Mañengue.”  Raised in Puerto Rico\, he played with Batacumbele and traveled to Cuba\, where he and Jose Luis Quintana\, “Changuito\,” created rhythms which defined the next wave of Latin music.  By 1985 he was working with Eddie Palmieri at the Village Gate\, where Dizzy Gillespie heard him and invited him to join Dizzy’s United Nation Orchestra.  In the ‘90s\, he taught at Berklee College of Music. Since joining Planet Drum in 1990\, Giovanni has also worked with a wide range of musicians\, from Art Blakey to Don Byron to Sammy Hagar and Paul Simon.
