SUMMARY:A Celebration of Women Composers of Classical Music
DESCRIPTION:The Friends and Staff of Cos Cob Library are pleased to welcome back Jeffrey Engel who will present a lecture titled\, A Celebration of Women Composers of Classical Music. While there have always been women composers\, it was not until the end of the nineteenth century that significantly more women began to enjoy public performances of classical music and became professional composers. Mr. Engel will highlight the lives and the music of several distinguished female composers and concert pianists who attained recognition and success during the nineteenth century. Mr. Engel’s lectures are not only informative but are also entertaining with his use of amusing anecdotes and musical illustrations. \nJeffrey Engel graduated from Ithaca College(New York). He lived in Paris for fourteen years where he studied cello\, art history(at the Sorbonne) and earned diplomas in the French language. As a cellist\, he played with numerous orchestras in France including that of the Paris Opera\, performed in chamber ensembles\, and taught in municipal conservatories. Mr. Engel has taught at Northwestern Connecticut Community College(Winsted) since 2004.

SUMMARY:Union: The Struggle to Forge the Story of United States Nationhood
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. is an extremely fragile creation because it was formed as an ad hoc alliance of rival colonies\, each with very different ethnographic\, political\, and religious characteristics. Woodard describes the 19th century effort to create and propagate a national narrative for the U.S. that could unite its disparate regional cultures\, a battle that continues to rage today with existential stakes. \n

SUMMARY:God’s Little Acre: The Slave Trade in Newport with Keith Stokes
DESCRIPTION:Cemeteries are largely seen as final resting places – an end. But God’s Little Acre\, a Colonial African Burying Ground in Newport\, Rhode Island is the beginning point to a rich cultural tapestry that is Newport’s African and African-American history. \nRecognized as the oldest and largest existing enslaved and free African heritage burying ground in America dating back to 1705\, the historic site contains the remains of men\, women and children who are directly connected through the African Diaspora and back to West Africa. \nDon’t miss this special opportunity to hear award-winning national treasure Keith Stokes\, a descendant of family buried at God’s Little Acre\, who will lead us in discussion of the colonial African community in Newport\, and modern preservation\, restoration\, research and most importantly\, how African heritage and history can be reclaimed and interpreted for today’s audiences.

SUMMARY:Robert Moses Master Builder – Political Master of New York
DESCRIPTION:Mark Nunan will discuss the career of Robert Moses\, the master builder who played a larger role in shaping the physical environment of New York City and State than any other figure in the 20th century. A pragmatic builder of public structures for five decades\, Moses has been praised as a genius\, a creative visionary\, and “the most influential seminal thinker” in 20th-century urban renewal. However\, the Moses vision of New York\, less one of neighborhoods and brownstones than one of soaring towers\, open parks\, highways and beaches\, eventually was called into question by critics. His political mastery also became highly controversial as he was considered too powerful for an unelected official. A national debate about twentieth-century metropolises emanated from the tenure of Robert Moses. \nAn international executive\, Mark joined COS. Inc. in 1982 and retired from their New York office as a Senior-Vice President in 2018. COS is a private firm that provides business and economic development services to corporations and governments across a wide range of activities from public infrastructure and engineering to aerospace\, defense and environmental services. He has worked on engagements with some of the largest US\, European and Asian companies and governmental agencies\, such as The French Minister of Commerce\, The City of New York Economic Development Corporation and the Mayors of Metz and Marseille.

SUMMARY:Dedication to Duty: Captain Jay Dirnberger
DESCRIPTION:Captain Jay Dirnberger served with pride and distinction as a combat helicopter pilot\, flight leader and operations officer in Vietnam in 1968. He was awarded the Silver Star\, Distinguished Flying Cross\, Bronze Star\, Air Medal with 22 Oak Leaf Clusters and Vietnamese Cross for Gallantry with Silver Star. When Lieutenant Dirnberger arrived in Vietnam on January 1\, 1968\, he was assigned to the 1st Calvary Division\, Alpha Company\, 227th Assault Helicopter Battalion\, stationed at Camp Evans\, north of Hue and just a few miles from the Demilitarized Zone. The 1st Cavalry was an airmobile division with 20\,000 men and nearly 450 helicopters–the most firepower and mobility of any division-size unit in Vietnam. \nCapt. Dirnberger flew a UH-1H “Huey” helicopter. It was manned by a crew of four- a pilot\, co-pilot\, crew chief and gunner\, with the crew chief becoming a gunner when airborne. A machine gun was mounted on each side. It flew at up to 130 miles per hour and altitudes of up to 10\,000 feet– “but got a little wobbly when you got up there.” Its tanks held three and one-half hours of fuel. A Huey could carry 1300 to 1500 pounds- seven fully armed American soldiers or ten Vietnamese. About 10% of the 58\,000 American lives lost in Vietnam were helicopter crews. Over 12\,000 helicopters were used in Vietnam and more than 5.000 were destroyed. Being a helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War was a high risk and harrowing assignment undertaken only by the courageous. \nCaptain Dirnberger recorded an interview for the Library of Congress Veterans History Project during a reunion of his Vietnam unit in Nashville\, TN in 2018 and portions of that interview will be part of his presentation to the RMA. Following his military service he had a career in New York City as an investment portfolio manager. Now retired\, Captain Dirnberger lives in Westport where he is active on the Boards of the Westport Museum and the Westport Playhouse. He volunteers as a school mentor in the international community of Bridgeport and is a Past President of the Y’s Men of Westport/Weston.

SUMMARY:How to Ease Traffic Congestion in Greenwich
DESCRIPTION:How to Ease Traffic Congestion in Greenwich\n– Moderator: Ernst Schirmer\n– Panelists: Kristin Floberg\, Planner\, Western Connecticut Council of Governments (WestCOG); Jason Spigel\, Freebee\, and TBD \nTraffic congestion from vehicles results in a significant time burden across the globe. If time is money\, time spent in traffic comes at a high cost. As of September 2020\, an average American worker loses approximately $1\,591 per year to traffic. \nWages and productivity aren’t the only things traffic affects. Traffic congestion racks up many costs that are more difficult to calculate. These include the environmental impact of carbon emissions from idling tailpipes\, the staggering cost of repairing and replacing roads and bridge infrastructure\, and the health impacts of gridlock-induced stress. \nWith the advent of smart mobility\, the return of micro-mobility\, and tougher regulations on car emissions\, the question of whether we have a new window of opportunity to tame congestion is now high on the list of possibilities. This panel discussion will look at a number of valuable options for easing congestion in Greenwich while highlighting their benefits and challenges.

SUMMARY:Literary Connections with Mark Schenker: "Mrs. Dalloway" by Virginia Woolf
DESCRIPTION:Published in 1925\, Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway became a masterpiece of modern fiction and helped to redefine what a novel is. In October 2005 it was included in Time’s list of the 100 best English language novels written since Time debuted in 1923. \nIn this vivid portrait of a single day in a woman’s life\, Mrs. Clarissa Dalloway is preoccupied with the last-minute details of preparation for a party while in her mind she is something much more than a perfect society hostess. As she readies her house for friends and neighbors\, she is flooded with remembrances of the past—the passionate loves of her carefree youth\, her practical choice of husband\, and the approach and retreat of war. And\, met with the realities of the present\, Clarissa reexamines the choices that brought her there\, hesitantly looking ahead to the unfamiliar work of growing old. \nFrom the introspective Clarissa to the lover who never fully recovered from her rejection\, to a war-ravaged stranger in the park\, the characters and scope of Mrs. Dalloway reshape our sense of ordinary life making it one of the most “moving\, revolutionary artworks of the twentieth century” (Michael Cunningham).

SUMMARY:Marek Zabriskie to preach on ‘Day 1’
DESCRIPTION:The Rev. Marek Zabriskie\, rector of Christ Church Episcopal in Greenwich\, Conn.\, is the featured preacher March 28\, Palm Sunday\, and April 4\, Easter Sunday\, on “Day 1” with host Peter Wallace\, the nationally broadcast ecumenical radio program also accessible online at Day1.org and by podcast. \n“The Donkey Detail\,” his sermon for Pal Sunday\, is based on Mark 11:1-11\, the account of Jesus’s entry into Jerusalem. He says\, “I have learned that God assigns us little tasks in life that make a crucial difference\, like fetching donkeys.” \n“God Says\, ‘Nevertheless’” his Easter sermon is drawn from the account of the visit of Mary Magdalene\, Mary\, the mother of James\, and Salome to the tomb found in Mark 16:1-8. “The resurrection is an outrageous assault on our shrunken worldviews\,” he says. It’s a full frontal attack on our Good Friday outlook when God dreams for us to have an Easter reality.”
