DESCRIPTION:Louise Comfort Tiffany is renowned for his stained glass windows\, furniture\, books\, textiles and blown glass\, many of which draw from nature for inspiration. But the large and carefully selected group of artists and craftspeople responsible for selecting and cutting glass for Tiffany’s famous creations (dubbed “Tiffany Girls”) went largely unrecognized despite their contributions to his success.\nLecturer Alice Frelinghuysen will focus on the work of Agnes Northrop\, who was the only truly independent female designer among Tiffany’s team. Wang Curator of American Decorative Arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, have  published widely and curated exhibitions on American ceramics and glass\, as well as late 19th-century decorative arts\, especially the work of Louis Comfort Tiffany. In 2009\, she oversaw the curatorial team that reinstalled The American Wing’s Charles Engelhard Court. A graduate of Princeton University\, she earned her MA at the Winterthur Program in early American culture. She is currently working on a book on the Robert A. Ellison Jr. Collection of American Art Pottery\, the installation of the Worsham-Rockefeller Dressing Room\, and a complementary exhibition on George A. Schastey.\nThis lecture is a part of the Art\, History and Landscape Lecture Series presented in memory of David R Wierdsma. \nWednesday\, May 17\, 2017\nDoors open at 6:30 pm with light refreshments in the classroom.\nLecture begins at 7:00 pm\, and will last roughly 45 minutes followed by a 15-minute Q&A session. \nMembers: $15; nonmembers $20\nTickets include admission to the Storehouse Gallery\, open from 6:00 to 6:45 pm.\nVisit http://www.greenwichhistory.org/adult to reserve seats or call 203-869-6899\, Ext. 10.

SUMMARY:“13 Reasons Why”: A Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The Netflix series “Thirteen Reasons Why” features a young girl who commits suicide\, flashing back to the thirteen different reasons why she decides to take her own life. It has proven controversial\, in part because of its edgy and sometime graphic content\, and many schools in our area have sent warnings to parents out of concern that it glamorizes suicide.\n \nBut the show also raises important questions for communities about the challenges our young people face.  “It’s a flawed show in some ways\,” says Rev. Maxwell Grant\, “yet we should learn from it rather than fear it.” \n \nPlease join us for a community conversation about the show and also bullying\, cyber-bullying and how it can lead to teen suicide.\nWe anticipate a lively conversation about this very difficult topic and welcome anyone that would like to attend. This presentation is free and open to the greater Greenwich community and all are encouraged to attend with their teenagers for this informative discussion.\n \nFor parking\, pull into the left side of church driveway and continue to parking lot area.

SUMMARY:Friends Friday Films: Genius
DESCRIPTION:There’s no longer-lived or better-known program associated with Greenwich Library than the Friends Friday Film Series\, now 69 years old. The screening of the day is Genius (2016\, directed by Michael Grandage). The film explores the working relationship between Scribner’s famous literary editor Maxwell Perkins and irrepressible writer Thomas Wolfe as they crafted Wolfe’s 1929 classic “Look Homeward\, Angel” together. The exchanges between editor and author are exhilarating. Also glimpsed are Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Friends Friday Films are open to all at no charge through the support of the Friends of Greenwich Library.
