SUMMARY:Connecticut Ceramics Study Circle Seminar: “The Magic of Fire: The Chinese Potters Palette” @ The Bruce Museum
DESCRIPTION:Image: Guan Jar with Dragon Décor\, Chinese; Ming dynasty\, Blue-and-white ware: porcelain with decoration in underglaze\, Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York.\n“The Magic of Fire:  The Chinese Potters Palette”\nThree-part seminar by Robert D. Mowry\, Alan J. Dworsky Curator of Chinese Art Emeritus\, Harvard University\, Cambridge\, Massachusetts\nThe three illustrated lectures will explore the origins of the color palette developed by Chinese potters over many centuries\, as well as the many beautiful manifestations in objects of beauty and usefulness.\n1. From Black and Brown to Celadon:  Iron Oxide and its Magic\nBy mass\, iron occurs naturally in soil and clay and was easily discovered as a ceramic coloring agent. Chinese potters quickly learned to create celadon\, or pale bluish-green\, glazes.\n2. From Royal to Navy:  Cobalt in Its Glory\nCobalt entered the repertory of ceramic coloring agents in the Tang dynasty (618–907)\, but widespread use occurred during the Yuan dynasty (1279–1368)\, when potters at Jingdezhen\, Jiangxi province\, began to use it to embellish porcelain vessels\, creating blue-and-white ware.\n3. Seeing Red:  Copper Glazes from Peach Bloom to Sang de Boeuf\nAlthough used in making bronze during the earlier Shang dynasty (c. 1600 BC–c. 1050 BC)\, copper was not used as a ceramic coloring agent until the Han dynasty (206 BC–AD 220). In the Qing dynasty (1644–1911)\, potters revived interest in underglaze painting in copper red\, achieved success with pieces whose painted designs boast perfect color\, fine lines\, and hard edges.\nRobert D. Mowry is the Alan J. Dworsky Curator of Chinese Art Emeritus at Harvard University in Cambridge\, Massachusetts and\, until his retirement\, also a senior lecturer on Chinese and Korean art in Harvard’s Department of Art History and Architecture. Mowry’s passion for Asian art and culture was sparked by his two-year service in the Peace Corps in Korea\, teaching English at Seoul National University. He then returned to the University of Kansas\, where he completed his graduate work\, taking his degrees with honors. Fluent in Mandarin\, he spent two years as a curatorial assistant and translator in the Department of Painting and Calligraphy at the National Palace Museum\, Taipei\, Taiwan. His career is distinguished with many pioneering leadership roles and ground-breaking scholarship. He was founding Curator of the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection at The Asia Society\, New York\, and\, before that\, Assistant Curator of Oriental Art at Harvard’s Fogg Art Museum.\nAdmission: Members $95; Students with valid ID and members of Ceramics Organizations $110; Non-Members $135.  A gourmet Box Lunch of is provided.  Space is limited.\nFor reservations and information: marylin.chou@gmail.com or (203) 863-9655; www.ctcsc.org.

SUMMARY:Sister Rosemary Nyirumbe\, CNN Hero and humanitarian
DESCRIPTION:Round Hill Community Church invites you to hear humanitarian Sister Rosemary Nyirumbe speak on Monday\, April 10 at 7:00 p.m. Sister Rosemary\, a Ugandan nun and one of Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in the World\,” is the subject of the book “Sewing Hope.” Her speech will be followed by a Q&A\, book signing\, and a wine and cheese reception. Cost is $10.00. \nSister Rosemary has been honored for her work in saving the lives of thousands of girls during the rebel wars in Uganda and South Sudan. She has received the United Nations Impact Award\, been named a CNN Hero\, and been honored by the “Women in the World” summit conferences in this country and around the world. \nThis is Sister Rosemary’s second visit to Round Hill. She will update us on the current news and challenges she faces in her continuing work at St. Monica’s various campuses in Gulu\, Moyo\, Adjumani\, and at the Sewing Hope Orphan Village in Atiak in Uganda. Due to drought and famine\, she has started an agriculture program to raise cows and grow food\, and continues to educate the young women and children to become self-sufficient. Through the Sewing Hope Foundation Sister Rosemary teaches the children to sew\, cook\, and make beautiful purses and jewelry and she will bring her purses with her for sale when she comes to Round Hill. \nFor the last 30 years Sister Rosemary has answered the call to serve the victims at the epicenter of the bloody and violent civil wars that decimated North Uganda and South Sudan. For years\, Joseph Kony and his “Lord’s Resistance Army” terrorized villages and stole children from their families\, forcing them into slavery. Armed with only a sewing machine\, Sister Rosemary openly defied the rebels in their reign of terror. Since 2002\, she has enrolled more than 2000 girls\, who had been abducted and abandoned by their families\, into her “Saint Monica’s Girls Tailoring Center” in Gulu\, Uganda. She has made it her mission to provide a home and school for women and girls whose lives have been shattered by violence\, rape\, and sexual exploitation and given them ways to support themselves through job training in tailoring\, catering\, and other practical skills to restore their dignity\, independence\, and hope. \nShe says\, “I want to give a voice to the voiceless and give these young women and children dignity so they will be accepted in society.” Her story is of one woman’s fight to bring hope and dignity back to her nation. \nFor reservations: visit roundhillcommunitychurch.org or call 203-869-1091.
