On behalf of STAR Inc., Lighting the Way, I would like to extend our deepest appreciation to the New Canaan High School SLOBS volunteer group. This group of young men volunteer as buddies at the STAR New Canaan Sports Buddies Program every Saturday providing guidance, encouragement and companionship to local youth.
Sports Buddies is a weekly recreational program that offers an inclusive experience for youngsters with special needs and unique abilities. It is designed to enhance their social, physical, and emotional well-being through a fun-filled sports experience with their peers. Children of all ability levels are paired with youth and adult volunteers (“buddies”) to learn basic sport skills, improve physical conditioning, experience team dynamics, build confidence and self-esteem and have fun. STAR Inc. Lighting the Way proudly supports New Canaan Sports Buddies to provide opportunities for local youth.
STAR, Inc., Lighting the Way is a not–for-profit organization established in 1952 by local parents to serve individuals of all ages who have intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as providing support services to their families. STAR creates opportunities for individuals to live full lives with independence, freedom of choice and personal growth by providing support, services and advocacy. Headquartered in Norwalk, with offices on Elm Street in New Canaan and in Darien, STAR aims to inform and encourage the community to recognize and appreciate the value of all individuals.
STAR recently honored New Canaan SLOBs at our Annual Meeting and Awards presentation in October. Ryan Stannard accepted the Youth Volunteers of the Year Award on behalf of his peers. We are honored to have these dedicated young men who generously share their time, talent, friendship, and compassion to improve the lives of others. We are sure they will be leading a new generation of responsible and caring citizens. Thank you SLOBs!
