This Week in Sports: Recapped

This past week was a whirlwind for the sports teams at New Canaan High School as they battled it out on the courts, fields, and rinks against formidable opponents. From stunning victories to close defeats, the athletes showcased their talent and determination throughout the week.

Monday: The week kicked off with an electrifying win for the varsity girls basketball team as they dominated Harding with a final score of 48-19. The crowd at New Canaan Main Gym was treated to an impressive display of skill and teamwork.

Tuesday: The varsity boys basketball team faced a tough challenge against Brien McMahon but fell short with a final score of 43-37. Despite their best efforts, they couldn’t secure the win at the New Canaan Main Gym. On the same day, the varsity girls basketball team continued their streak from the previous night’s victory with a resounding victory against Brien McMahon. Playing away at Brien McMahon High, they emerged triumphant with a dominant score of 41-25.

Thursday: Thursday brought more excitement as the varsity boys basketball team claimed a thrilling victory over Westhill with a narrow margin of 56-53. The atmosphere at New Canaan Main Gym was electric as fans cheered on their team to the very end. Meanwhile, the varsity girls basketball team kept up their winning streak with a hard-fought triumph against Westhill. Despite playing away at Westhill High School-Main Gym, they emerged victorious with a final score of 57-12, showcasing their dominance on the court. In another corner of the sporting world, the varsity girls gymnastics team demonstrated their skill and grace as they competed against Greenwich at the Greenwich YWCA. Though the competition was fierce, they maintained their composure and achieved an impressive score of 98.68.

Friday & Saturday: Trey Kaupp produced the best finish for New Canaan’s wrestling team at the 2024 Joe Sikorski FCIAC Wrestling Championships last Friday and Saturday. Wrestling in the 138-pound weight class, Kaupp finished second for the Rams, one of five competitors to place at the tournament for the team which finished 8th with a total of 69 points, showcasing their growing capabilities in a highly competitive field.

Championship Finals: The 138-pound category saw New Canaan’s Trey Kaupp in a close bout against Dominick Spadaro of Fairfield Warde. Kaupp showed remarkable resilience but was narrowly defeated with a score of 4-2, highlighting the intensity of the competition.

Third/Fourth Place Matches: In the 106-pound weight class, John Baluyut of New Canaan faced Oscar Rodriguez from Trumbull. Baluyut put up a strong fight but was narrowly defeated, with the match ending at 3-1 in favor of Rodriguez.

Fifth/Sixth Place Matches: The 150-pound weight class featured an impressive victory for New Canaan’s Teddy Goetz, who decisively defeated Reid Peterson from Trumbull with a score of 10-3. In a significant 157-pound class bout, Austin Rasmussen of Fairfield Warde was awarded a forfeit over Dylan Mastroianni from New Canaan. Peter Brandt of New Canaan was marked as M FOR (medical forfeit) in the 215-pound weight class.

Saturday: The week came to a close with a tough loss for the varsity girls ice hockey team against Darien. Despite their best efforts on home ice at Darien Ice House-Ice Rink, they narrowly fell short with a final score of 0-1. Though disappointed, they showed great resilience and sportsmanship throughout the game.
