A memorial display featuring 1,231 electric candles has been installed on God’s Acre to honor the victims of the October 7 massacre in Israel. The display, which began on Sunday, October 6, is intended as a tribute to the lives lost in the attack.
Organized by the Chabad of New Canaan, the installation is particularly prominent after sunset, when the candles light up the area, each representing one of the 1,231 victims. Banners accompanying the candles explain that each light symbolizes a life lost and also call attention to the hostages who remain captive. The banners provide context for visitors, urging awareness of the hostages’ ongoing situation.
“The sight of 1,231 candles lighting up the night is a sobering reminder of the immense loss we have suffered,” said Rabbi Levi Mendelow. “As each flame flickers, it not only memorializes a life, but also stands as a collective symbol of resilience and remembrance. We hope this display will move people to reflect and inspire unity in the face of such heartbreak.”
The memorial is visible during the day, but its full impact is seen after nightfall.
