New Canaan’s Town Clerk, Claudia Weber, has been nominated to the Board of Directors of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC) and will be seated as a Director of IIMC this month. For the next three years, Ms. Weber will serve as one of two Region One Directors representing the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York.
Founded in 1947, IIMC is the leading and largest professional nonprofit association focused on improving the professionalism of its members and serving the needs of Municipal Clerks worldwide by promoting continuing education and certification through university and college-based institutions. With approximately 15,000 members, IIMC represents municipalities of fewer than 500 to more than 10 million people.
IIMC is affiliated with 49 of the United States and nine international Associations. It is composed of 11 Regions and each Region is represented by two Region Directors. In addition to the United States of America, the following countries are also active members: Canada, Australia, Belgium, Bermuda, England, Italy, New Zealand, South Africa, the Netherlands, and Wales.
Ms. Weber has been New Canaan’s Town Clerk since 1998 and served as the Registrar of Voters prior to that. Previously, she served as the Assistant Clerk of the Probate Court, District of New Canaan, was appointed as one of two Confidential Assistants to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce by the Reagan/Bush administration and served as a staff member to both a U.S. Senator and a U.S. Congressman. She holds a B.A. in Political Science from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
Ms. Weber is currently a Certified Municipal Clerk and a Chief Election Official with in-depth knowledge of election laws and election administration, technology, land and records management, preservation and conservation. She is also the town’s Registrar of Vital Statistics and oversees the issuance and management of all birth, marriage and death records. She manages an office of four staff members who together collectively manage approximately $12 million in revenues annually.
Ms. Weber also serves as a Justice of the Peace and as a Notary Public. Her avocation and passion is animal rescue, and in 1985 she, and a handful of others, founded a local nonprofit dedicated to helping homeless pets and animals in need. She is known for her animal advocacy and has received numerous accolades for her work in that field.
