Rise and Shine: Early Morning Bird Walks Return to Bristow Sanctuary

Early risers with an eye for feathers and a love of the outdoors will once again have a chance to join Senior Naturalist Frank Gallo for Fall Early Morning Bird Walks at Bristow Sanctuary.

The walks, hosted by the New Canaan Nature Center, will take place on Thursday mornings—September 18, October 2, October 16, October 30, and November 13—from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. All programs are free of charge and open to birders of all experience levels.

Participants will meet at the concession stand across from the ball fields at Mead Park before heading into Bristow. Parking is available at Mead Park, and binoculars will be provided for those who need them.

The purpose of the series goes beyond birdwatching. Under Gallo’s guidance, attendees will help build a growing database and create updated bird lists for both Bristow Sanctuary and the New Canaan Nature Center. Each walk is an opportunity not only to enjoy nature but also to contribute to ongoing conservation work.

“All of the birds we observe are recorded,” Gallo explained in past programs, noting that the data helps track migration patterns and the health of local bird populations.

With more than 200 bird species recorded at Bristow and surrounding preserves, participants may spot anything from warblers to woodpeckers, depending on the season and conditions. “Every walk brings surprises,” organizers note, “and you don’t need to be an expert—just curious.”

The series also serves as a fundraiser for the Nature Center. While the walks are free, donations are encouraged, with a $100 goal set for this fall. Attendees can reserve a space online or contribute directly to support the Nature Center’s education and conservation mission.

Organizers remind participants that all walks are weather dependent and will be canceled in the event of rain.
