I’d like to take a moment first to acknowledge the tragic and shocking assassination of Charlie Kirk this past week, a public figure whose work reached many. This act of violence has left communities across the country, including our own, deeply saddened and concerned. No one should ever face such a senseless end.
Let me be clear: we unequivocally denounce all forms of political violence that has no place in our society, regardless of one’s beliefs or affiliations. Violence destroys the trust we need to build stronger communities.
At the same time, this moment reminds us of the importance of free speech. Charlie Kirk, as an educator and speaker, encouraged students to engage critically with ideas, even those that they disagreed with. As a district, we too champion intellectual diversity and understand that learning thrives when different perspectives are debated.
Respectfully, at times in our lives we are called to enter uncomfortable spaces and foster dialogue, pursuing truth through discussion and not division. Regardless of whether we agreed with Mr. Kirk, his approach challenges us all to engage peacefully with hard conversations.
Here in New Canaan, we must create spaces where diverse views are heard without fear — classrooms, clubs, and community forums that prioritize respect and critical thinking. And as a board, we are committed to this and to ensuring our students learn to bridge divides through thoughtful dialogue and civil discourse.
Let’s use this tragedy to recommit to unity and civility in this amazing town. Thank you.
