The New Canaan Beautification League kicks off its annual fundraising drive this month to support its continued commitment to enhancing the beauty and charm of New Canaan.
Over the past decade, the Beautification League has invested more than $500,000 in designing, planting, and maintaining a diverse range of native trees and vibrant perennial gardens that enhance the streets, sidewalks, and town parks, while benefiting wildlife and the environment.
“Our dedicated volunteers are passionate about creating beautiful spaces for residents and visitors to enjoy,” said Nancy Malling, president of the New Canaan Beautification League. “Whether strolling around town, walking through Lee Memorial Garden, or grabbing a bite at a local restaurant, our work is on display.”
Founded in 1939, the Beautification League is a nonprofit organization that relies solely on contributions to fund its annual projects. These include 227 hanging baskets, 34 traffic triangles, 16 restaurant planters, and 65 handmade holiday wreaths.
Civic projects designed by the organization can cost $15,000 to $20,000, depending on the scope of the work. These have included the planting and maintenance of hundreds of trees and perennials at various locations, including the train station, Pine St. mailbox area, and Mead Park—specifically at the park’s entrance and exit, as well as along the Gold Star Walk. Other projects, such as the plaza on Richmond Hill Road, the design and maintenance of the police station landscaping, and the revitalization of the Schoohouse Apartments’ grounds, have kept this group busy.
Volunteers are especially proud of the role they played in selecting the 140 native trees that the town planted last spring along South Ave. A redesign of the garden at the Center Bell sitting area, located across from the library, is currently underway.
“We are truly grateful for the generous donations that help us make New Canaan a beautiful place to live, work, and visit year-round,” said Malling.
