The New Canaan Men’s Club will hear about the mission of Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Connecticut in remarks by two of that organization’s officers when the club meets Friday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 111 Oenoke Ridge.
The club already has a close affiliation with Habitat for Humanity as several of its members have volunteered on home building projects with the organization for years, helping to build affordable homes in Fairfield County.
Habitat’s Matt Flattery, director of construction; and Jay Helmer, development manager, will begin their remarks at 10:40 a.m., following the business portion of the meeting which gets underway at 10 a.m.
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that builds affordable homes in partnership with families earning 40-70% of the area’s median income. It then sells the homes to families with 30-year interest-free mortgages based on the buyer’s ability to pay to ensure long-term affordability. Habitat of Coastal Connecticut has earned its reputation by transforming abandoned properties into homes for taxpaying community members, building nearly 300 homes housing over 1,227 family members since its founding in 1985.
By constructing new homes and rehabilitating existing homes, Slattery and Helmer will describe how Habitat homeowners can achieve the strength, stability and independence they need to build a better future for themselves and their families. The organization’s web site states Habitat for Humanity “was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter should be a matter of conscience and action for all.”
The New Canaan Men’s Club has openings for new members, men 55-years old and above. For information about joining, email ncmens@ncmens.org.
