Film Series. The Great Artists: Their Lives, Times and Works – The Impressionists
Wednesdays from 10:30-11:45 am. Held in the Bantle Lecture Gallery. Free and open to the public. Reservations suggested as seating is limited. This film series chronicles the life, times and works of each featured artist and explores their stylistic trademarks. The programs also place each artist in historical context, highlighting the events that inspired his work and providing a clearer understanding of the creative process. The five programs in this collection provide an in-depth look into the fascinating world of the Impressionists and their art.
This week: Renoir — Arguably the greatest of all the Impressionist artists, Pierre August Renoir’s brilliant Le Moulin de la Gallette created immense controversy in its day. Famount for his use of hot reds, orange and gold to portray nudes in sunlight, Renoir’s later life was blighted by arthritis, which crippled his hands. This fascinating story of the man and his work includes a visit to the artist’s home Cagnes-sur-Mer on the island of La Grenouillere, and unique footage of an Impressionist festival.
