First Sunday Science: Bat Diversity Post White-Nose Syndrome

January 5, 2020 @ 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm

Over the past decade, white-nose syndrome (WNS) has killed upwards of 7 million North American bats. This highly invasive fungal disease is present in 33 states and continues to spread on a yearly basis. Regional species extinctions have been forecasted, and many once common species are being considered for endangered lists. At 2 pm at the Bruce Museum Seaside Center, Chris Wisniewski, a faculty member in the biology department at Southern Connecticut State University, will discuss his research into WNS, including new ecological data that suggests all may not be lost. Remnant bat communities are persisting in WNS regions and are utilizing a variety of habitat types. Family activities from 1:30 – 3:30 pm.
