Sudden cardiac arrest and heart attacks are leading causes of death in America that require immediate treatment to keep a person alive.
Think of your home. You need plumbing (blood circulation and muscle) and electricity
(heartbeat function). If there’s a problem with either one, you’ re in trouble. Lack of circulation causes a heart attack; electrical malfunction causes sudden cardiac arrest.
Administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation ( CPR) and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) can keep a person alive until medical personnel arrive.
If you are in a public place and someone collapses, here’s how to help:
1. First and always, call 9-1-1 immediately.
2. Check for responsiveness and have someone see if a portable AED is available.
3. If there is no response, begin CPR while another person prepares the AED. Follow instructions on the kit.
The American Heart Association says performing hands only CPR to the beat of the Bee Gees song “Stayin’ Alive” may triple a person’s chance of survival.
