Boy Scouts Hold Groundbreaking For New Bridge

The Greenwich Boy Scouts held a groundbreaking ceremony Saturday for a new bridge at Camp Seton. This past weekend US Senator Richard Blumenthal was joined by State Representatives Hector Arzeno (D-151), Steve Meskers (D-150) and leaders from Greenwich Scouting to don hardhats and break ground on a new bridge at Camp Seton.

The bridge was wiped out in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida in September 2021. The bridge is a key link between main parts of the 240-acre Scout Camp that was established in 1912. The property features private woodlands, two lakes and five miles of hiking trails.

Officials said the remnants of Hurricane Ida in 2021 destroyed the Vehicle Bridge, which linked the main parts of the camp. The House delegation was able to secure $250,000 funding for the bridge repair from the Connecticut Dept of Economic and Community Development.

The Boy Scouts thanked Sen. Richard Blumenthal and other state lawmakers for making the $250,000 grant possible.

“So this project is vital because we needed to access the Nature Education Center, which is one of our premiere programs here for the Greenwich Council Boy Scouts,” said Kevin O’Shea, of the Boy Scouts of America Greenwich Council.

“This rebuilding is going to make possible this property continuing to be a gem,” Blumenthal said.

“It is very gratifying that we can bring back to our community grants, and especially to an institution like the Boy Scouts of America,” said State Rep. Hector Arzeno.

Officials said the bridge will be completed by spring and just in time for summer camp.

New Canaan resident Roy Abramowitz who is the Treasurer, audit committee chair and member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of the Greenwich Boy Scout Council said : “Since its inception in 1912, Greenwich Scouting goals have remained the same, emphasizing youth adventure, leadership, learning, outdoor exploration, and perhaps most importantly, service. The Greenwich Council is proud of its over 100 year legacy in providing the finest youth leadership program in the nation.”
